What do these numbers mean?
Contacts to the Ilinois Domestic Violence Hotline do not necessarily reflect the amount of domestic violence in any given community. Rather, they reflect survivors' knowledge of the Hotline and efforts to connect with local resources. If contacts in your community are declining, that may be an indication that targeted Hotline advertising and community education are needed. If contacts in your community are increasing, that may indicate that service providers in your community need additional resources to meet growing demand for programming.
Anyone can contact the Hotline, including survivors, providers, family and friends of survivors, or community members who are supporting survivors in their work. Data from contacts to the Hotline is collected on a voluntary basis and may not reflect a comprehensive list of all survivor needs and experiences with abuse. Information from these reports can guide conversations with elected officials regarding the impact of domestic violence in your community and the needs of survivors near you.
Contacts
The Hotline can be reached via call or text at **877-863-6338** or via chat on The Network's website at [www.the-network.org](/) . The term "contacts" refers to the combination of all methods of contact including calls, texts, and chats.
Top Needs
Hotline staff record all services that are requested during the course of a call. If a caller is seeking a high demand service like shelter and cannot access it during their first call, they may call repeatedly until they can access that service. The following list includes definitions for the most requested services in these district reports.
- Domestic Violence (DV) Shelter is an emergency shelter program for survivors of domestic violence that provides them and their children with a safe, confidential place to stay and access wraparound domestic violence services.
- Information is a wide-ranging category that includes providing information to the caller about what gender-based violence is, how to exercise survivor rights, and access to safety planning with Hotline staff.
- Legal Advocacy for Orders of Protection (OP) is a kind of domestic violence service provided by legal advocates who are empowered under the Illinois Domestic Violence Act (IDVA) to assist in preparing, filing, and attending hearings for orders of protection in civil court.
- Crisis Intervention & Emotional Support is reflective of contacts to the Hotline by survivors who are actively in distress. Hotline staff offer emotional support through active listening, affirmations and emotional support, and assist survivors in moving out of crisis with a calm and grounding approach.
- Direct Link to Services is when a caller asks to be directly transferred to a resource, like a domestic violence program. Hotline staff provide a warm handoff to ensure that the survivor is connected to what they need.
- Counseling is a kind of domestic violence service provided by advocates who engage in domestic violence education, counseling and emotional support, and clinical therapy practice with a survivor.
- Civil Legal Representation is a kind of domestic violence service provided by an attorney who represents a survivor in civil legal cases other than orders of protection, including divorce, child custody, and immigration cases.
- Domestic Violence (DV) Support Group is a type of domestic violence service that provides survivors with a safe and supportive environment to share their experiences, gain insights, and receive encouragement from peers and facilitators.
Reports of Violence
Survivors experience a wide range of violence and Hotline staff record all references to types of abuse mentioned in the course of a call. Some examples of each kind of abuse include:
- Physical Abuse - punching, throwing objects, endangering a passenger in a car
- Emotional Abuse - gaslighting, name calling, socially isolating
- Sexual Abuse - coercing sexual activity, sabotaging birth control, interfering with access to reproductive healthcare
- Financial Abuse - interfering with ability to work, controlling access to finances, stealing valuable goods
These zip codes were assigned to House, Senate, and Congressional districts based on the number of registered voters living in that zip code per the 2020 census. In the case of IL House and Senate districts, a 25 voter threshold was applied. In the case of Congressional districts, a threshold of 500 registered voters was applied. This method may have produced an under-estimate in districts with many zip codes that have lower populations of registered voters.
