We Are “Unbroken Thread”: Story-telling, Creativity, & Community Healing
This presentation will take participants to a journey of challenges, reflections, and achievements about KAN-WIN’s community advocacy at the grassroots level on gender-based violence prevention and healing in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. The presentation will demonstrate our “Unbroken Thread:” Chinatown Story Circle series is a culturally-resonant, community-based approach in healing as our story-telling sessions created a safe space for the community members to share their experiences as well as listen to others’ without cultural concerns and language barriers. Moreover, incorporating an engaging and fun creative activity into each story-telling session also enhanced the community participants’ overall experience and in result, our story-tellers gained agency not only through sharing and active listening, but also through their own creativity.

Coral Wu - Presenter
Multilingual Community Advocate, KAN-WIN
Born and raised in Taiwan, Coral has lived in the US for more than 17 years. She first came to the US as an international student pursuing a Ph.D. in English Literature with a focus on Environmental Justice in the post-colonial world. However, instead of continuing her academic career, she chose to serve and work with people since “people” is something she really missed during her academic career. She entered the non-profit industry and became a community organizer in Chicago’s Chinatown. In 2023, she switched to KAN-WIN, an organization that focuses on gender-based violence intervention and prevention. Now she is a Multilingual Community Advocate at KAN-WIN overseeing Mandarin-speaking communities in greater Chicago. What she found the most fulfilling as being an advocate is to empower survivors as well as community members.
