Trauma-Informed Massage: A Healing Journey for Victims of Domestic Violence
This presentation educates domestic violence professionals on the potential benefits of incorporating trauma-informed massage into a survivor’s healing journey. Attendees will gain an understanding of how trauma manifests in the body and how trauma-informed massage can address its physical and emotional effects. The course highlights the principles of trauma-informed care, the importance of safety and trust, and the holistic nature of this approach. Through lecture, demonstrations, case studies, and interactive discussions, attendees will explore the role of massage therapy as part of a multidisciplinary support system for survivors. This course is not designed to teach massage techniques but to provide insights into how this practice can complement other interventions. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation of trauma-informed massage as a valuable tool in fostering relief, safety, and empowerment for victims of domestic violence.

Donna Kowalczyk Suchecki, MPH, LMT, CDVP, has been a Licensed Massage Therapist for 25 years and an Educator for the past decade. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and biology from North Central College and a master’s in public health from Northern Illinois University, with a focus on Health Promotion. A Certified Domestic Violence Professional, Donna specializes in trauma-informed massage, addressing the unique needs of domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. Her passion for this work began with her involvement at Mutual Ground, where she continues to volunteer today. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Donna integrates the latest research into her teaching and practice, ensuring compassionate and effective care. She believes everyone deserves a safe space to experience the profound healing of massage therapy.
