Cultivating Deep Safety in Survivor Communities: A Liberatory, Community-Focused Workshop
To truly combat violence—not just individually, but collectively and across society—we must foster a wraparound system of care grounded in deep safety, trust, and cultural belonging. This requires learning how to cultivate safety within ourselves first, so we can extend it to others in meaningful, sustainable ways.
Safety and well-being start with leading from empathy—first for ourselves, then for others—while moving with courage, honesty, and vulnerability. These elements lay the foundation for mutual trust, respect, and reciprocity. But we can’t build external safety until we’ve explored what’s happening within.
This workshop is designed for advocates, survivors of gender-based and community violence, allies, and practitioners who want to deepen their capacity for inner safety and resilience. Through guided instruction, conversation, and somatic exercises—including breathwork, orienting, and movement—participants will learn to:
- Cultivate safety in their bodies.
- Better understand their body’s cues and sensations.
- Identify what their body needs to feel safe.
- Distinguish between cultivating inner safety and creating a “safe space.”
At the core of conscious and liberatory leadership are self-awareness, trust, and empathy—essential tools for combating violence and fostering community safety and well-being. These are especially critical for vulnerable populations who have experienced harm.
Through trauma-informed modalities, participants will be gently guided to identify and cultivate their own sense of safety while also exploring what it takes to co-create safety in a group setting.
Outcomes:
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of their body’s cues and sensations, the ability to recognize when and how their body experiences arousal, and practical actions they can take to self-soothe and build a “practice of safety.” This workshop will support them in developing greater inner capacity, cultivating self-awareness, and integrating grounding practices and tools to sustain resilience over time.
