In 1997, The Network launched the Capacity Building team to respond to the on-going demand for professional domestic violence prevention and intervention training in Chicagoland. The trainings conducted by Capacity Building are designed to improve the quality of domestic violence services provided to survivors by enhancing the understanding, expertise and skill sets of community members, advocates, organizers and professionals. It has three classrooms:
40 Hour Domestic Violence Training
The introductory certificate training required by the IDVA for new domestic violence professionals, including volunteers and interns.
Advanced
Specialized
Training
Professional development trainings to improve the skills and knowledge of domestic violence workers and programs.
Allied
Professional
Training
Professional development for communities, organizations and institutions that are interested in learning the dynamics of domestic violence and how to address it.
Capacity Building is an official certified training site approved by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulations to provide continuing education units (CEUs).

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Capacity Building provides innovative education by staying up to date with the changing needs and landscape of the anti-violence movement in Chicagoland and abroad to provide the best possible training programs. Capacity Building is continuously improving and employing trauma-informed, culturally-humble best practices within our learning environment. Capacity Building recognizes that domestic violence does not occur in a vacuum; violence is directly influenced by the structural, institutional, societal and cultural dynamics that impact the interpersonal relationships of the survivor, the person who harmed, and the community they live in. Because of this, Capacity Building is committed to working with anti-oppression frameworks driven by transformative justice values for all training and education provided.

The root causes of domestic violence are complex and also intertwined with global systemic issues. This includes challenging forces like misogyny, heterosexism, genderism, white supremacy, and socioeconomic disparities.
EDUCATION DRIVEN BY TRANSFORMATIVE JUSTICE VALUES
Education is guided by our deep commitment to transformative justice values, which aim to eliminate violence. We don’t just focus on specific instances of harm; we strive to change the very conditions and societal dynamics that allow such harm to occur.
FIGHTING VIOLENCE THROUGH COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT
Trainings combat violence by promoting community skill building, violence prevention and intervention, and survivor support via healing resources. Trainings also promote divestment from institutions that perpetuate inequality and violence to ensure further harm doesn’t occur.
